How Vivillon's pattern changes in Pokémon GO
Vivillon's wings carry a pattern that depends on the part of the world it comes from. Pokémon GO has 18 of them, from Icy Snow in the far north to Jungle in the tropics. So to collect them all, playing near home isn't enough: you need Postcards sent from all over the world.
Getting Scatterbug from Postcards
Scatterbug, Vivillon's first stage, doesn't appear in the wild. You get it by pinning Postcards in your Postcard Book.
Receive Gifts. Every Gift from a friend holds the Postcard of the PokéStop or Gym where they picked it up.
Pin the Postcard in your Postcard Book. Each Postcard adds to the sub-medal of its region, under the Vivillon Collector medal. You can also pin up to three of your own Postcards a day.
Three Postcards from the same region unlock a first encounter with a Scatterbug of that region's pattern. It takes 9 for the second, then 15 for each one after that.
Evolve: 25 Candy to evolve Scatterbug into Spewpa, then 100 Candy to get Vivillon.
A Postcard that has already been counted can be removed from the Book without losing any progress, which frees up room for the next ones. It won't count a second time if you pin it again.
Having friends in the right regions
So it all comes down to your friends. A friend in Japan will bring you the Elegant pattern, a friend in Brazil the Savanna pattern. Check your Pokédex for the patterns you're missing, then look for players who live in those regions: GogoRaid's friend code list brings together trainers from all over the world. Once you're friends, exchange Gifts.
The Shiny version
All 18 patterns have had a Shiny version since February 2025 and the Scattered to the Winds event. There's no other method: every Scatterbug you get from Postcards has a small chance of being Shiny, and it keeps its pattern when it evolves. In your checklist, the "Shiny" button keeps a separate list.
Fancy and Poké Ball
These two patterns exist in the main games, but Pokémon GO hasn't offered them yet. So they don't count towards the 18. We'll update this page as soon as an event brings them.

It depends on the region: Garden in Great Britain, Ireland and New Zealand; Modern in the eastern United States, High Plains in the west, Polar in the north; River in Australia. The borders between patterns are approximate, and the in-game map doesn't show them precisely.
How much Candy does it take to evolve Scatterbug?
25 Candy to get Spewpa, then 100 to get Vivillon: 125 in total per pattern.
